Aaron Riley vs. Shane Nelson

Aaron Riley defeats Shane Nelson
by unanimous decision at UFC 101

Aaron Riley is a hard worker from Greg Jackson’s camp. Shane Nelson is an undersized lightweight who trains with some of BJ Penn’s people. The outcome of this fight should come as no surprise to anyone.

Aaron used his wrestling in an aggressive fashion to control his opponent. It’s clear he was the stronger of the two. Under the circumstances, Shane put up a good fight. However you could tell his cardio was suffering throughout the fight. It’s not clear whether that was due to his connection with his often-tired mentor or his difficulty handling a larger opponent. In either case, it’s clear he should head to the WEC and drop to 145. They’ve got a hell of a featherweight division down there. Just ask Joe Rogan.

Greg Jackson was quite pleased with his student’s performance. It was easy to see why. However a decision win on this night only gets Riley one small step up the terrifying lightweight ladder. There are lots of 155ers with great wrestling that will give Aaron a much greater challenge than what he received tonight against Nelson.
