About Eric’s MMA Tutorial
Welcome to “Eric’s MMA Tutorial”. I’m sure by now you’ve figured out this is indeed a website about Mixed Martial Arts, with perhaps a slight bias to the UFC! There are of course all those adorable little promotions trying to compete with the Zuffa-owned juggernaut. . . and perhaps someday one of them will overtake the UFC. But for now, this discussion will be heavily weighted towards Dana White's prize production, the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As a self-proclaimed UFC 'enthusiast' (read 'fanboy'), I *try* to keep my judgments objective. I actually have a hard time finding my true opinion on things because I’m always willing to see things from the other side of the fence, I mean, cage! Getting into the UFC Why a Tutorial? Contact Me Directly Yes, I am writing from my own biases. Some articles will be more narrow-minded than others. However perhaps you will find a perspective that strikes a chord with you and gives you a greater understanding of your own viewpoint. On the other hand, you may also find that you can’t relate to anything I say and never come back again. I understand. Not every punch can be a knockout, right? -----------------How I Became a UFC Fan I’ve been following the UFC very closely for the past several years now and it’s actually kind of tricky to remember what my first exposure to the product was. I know that I watched a few fights from UFC Unleashed… The one fight that does stand out from that phase was GSP’s destruction of Frank Trigg in Aug 2005. I remember being amazed at how dominant he was at…whatever it was he was doing. I didn’t fully understand what was going on but I remember thinking it was really neat. Oddly enough it wasn’t an exciting fight that got me ‘officially’ into the UFC. It was actually a really boring fight between Rashad Evans and Tom Murphy from one of the early episodes of The Ultimate Fighter Season 2. I got to see Dana’s very negative view of the fight, Matt Hughes’ criticisms of Rashad and Rashad’s defensive posture to the whole thing. I think it was the psychological aspect of MMA that fascinated me. It wasn’t originally the technical aspect of MMA that got me hooked. That understanding would only come months later after I had seen more quality fights. Seeing how fighters could “live and die in their own minds” was what kept motivating me to see more fights. And of course, following The Ultimate Fighter on Spike T.V. was a must. I got to see constant reminders of when to watch the upcoming PPV’s and I’ve been keeping up ever since. -----------------About The Site Concept The “tutorial” part of “Eric’s MMA Tutorial” comes from an expensive (thanks to Mom and Dad) and enjoyable general arts education with a major in English at lovely Simon Fraser University on top of Burnaby Mountain, in south-western British Columbia. (Some say that Burnaby Mountain now leans more to the left due to the political leanings of said establishment but I assure you it’s just a rumor!) Anyway, at SFU I had the pleasure of many discussions with my peers in tutorial group sessions. It was a great opportunity to voice my opinion to those who were gracious enough to listen to me (or forced to as the case may be) and that’s what I want to recreate here – the pressure to justify my opinions with some semblance of logical evidence and a venue for creating debate.
-----------------It’s great to be an armchair analyst and toss around vague theories but I hope to go a little bit deeper than that. I’d like to actually make a spirited attempt to convince others that there’s some actual merit to what I’m saying. I hesitate to claim that I offer an objective take on the topics I’m covering but I can provide multiple, biased perspectives with at least a veneer/facade of logic. Ultimately, you’re going to get my take on things. I’m not one to just sit on the fence about issues – this is not the website for you if you only want to read reviews that reflect your own opinions. But if there is a great disparity between my opinion and yours then I’ll try to “close the distance” by at least being entertaining to read and having some logical base. Sincerely, E Distributor of MMA analysis and terrible jokes alike
