Bobby Lashley - Superstar in Progress

Bobby Lashley is the second man in recent memory to make the jump from WWE to MMA. Brock Lesnar created a blueprint for how to make the transition from staged to real combat sports. He demolished a half-decent opponent and then got his nice UFC contract. Lashley ought to be able to follow in Lesnar’s footsteps. After all, they have many things in common. They share the same hulking physique. (Although it seems odd that Lashley has slimmed down so much more since his WWE days, but that’s a hypothesis for another day.)

Both men come from an extensive background in amateur wrestling. And wrestling is the best discipline to carry with you into MMA, most especially when fighting in a cage. We’ll revisit that point a bit later.

Being in top position is the best way to control the fight. A wrestler’s “shoot first, ask questions later” mentality is what you need to accomplish that feat. Judges always have a tendency to score points for the combatant who’s pressing forward. You don’t even need to land punches to accomplish this. Though, history has also shown us that you don’t need to be an accomplished striker to be a good ground-and-pounder.

Bobby Lashley is trying to hit it big having only trained in MMA for about a year. The problem is that he is no Brock Lesnar. That’s the blunt way of putting it. It was wise of Bobby to take on another “modest” fight in his second MMA outing. He was supposed to take on the aging Ken Shamrock. Instead he got the man that couldn’t make 205 on the reality show – Jason Guida. Neither Ken nor Jason is considered relevant in today’s MMA picture so the change in opponent didn’t really matter.
