Chris Lytle vs. Kevin Burns

Chris Lytle defeats Kevin Burns
by unanimous decision at the Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale

These two definitely deserved their fight of the night bonus. Chris Lytle is one of the most reckless fighters in the UFC today. His technique is effective but not refined. He is experienced enough to throw in some body punches between headhunting shots. His stamina reservation skills are non-existent. As for his ratio of jabs to power punches, he makes Chuck Liddell look like Nate Diaz.

Kevin Burns was simply beat up in this fight. Granted, he did rock Lytle late in round one. However he spent most of the fight in survival mode. He showed great mental toughness by fighting the last round covered in his own blood. Despite all of his good qualities, it’s doubtful he’s got what it takes to make a run in the welterweight division. It’s a shame the WEC doesn’t have 170’s anymore, as Dana and co. would like to keep Burns under the Zuffa banner.

In fact, both guys scream “career mid-carder” to me. However there’s no reason why that needs to be a damning statement. Marcus Davis is a fighter who has lost when facing potential top 10 competition. Despite that, he’s still considered a valuable fighter. Perhaps they should pull the trigger on Lytle vs. Davis 2 for their next UK event.
