Dan Hardy vs. Marcus Davis

Dan Hardy defeats Marcus Davis
by split decision at UFC 99

This fight didn’t go the way I expected it to. Instead of coming out guns blazing, Marcus Davis opted to clinch and work for a take down. He had to work pretty hard to get said takedown. Given that he didn’t do much in top position, it may have been better to work his stand-up instead. However it’s easy to see why he didn’t because Hardy managed to land a big strike in each round. Oddly enough, the big elbow that Hardy got in the third was when he was on top of Marcus.

It seemed like Davis was either a bit off his game or Dan Hardy was just the better striker that night. Either way, a lot of Irish Hand Grenade fans were disappointed. Granted, it was a close fight. However Joe’s assessment of Davis being stiff was accurate. It’s like Davis had put so much pressure on himself to win that he was afraid to make a mistake.

The judges were surely swayed by the damage that Davis took. He was bleeding at the end of rounds 1 and 3.

Hardy made the most of his opportunities in the post-fight interview. He played up the fact that he was just playing games with his pre-fight trash talk. He just wanted a mental advantage in the fight.

You might not like him, but you have to give props to Hardy for his strategy. Despite being a douche-bag, he got to be respectful at the end of the fight. That’s what people will remember the most - and the fact that he won. Meanwhile, Marcus Davis looks like a sore loser for having stormed off after the decision was rendered.

At the very least, I have to give credit to Davis for following through with his antagonism after the fight. Not like those two flip-floppers, Matt Hughes and Matt Serra.
