Frankie Edgar vs. Sean Sherk

Frankie Edgar defeats Sean Sherk
by unanimous decision at UFC 98

This was indeed the best performance of Frankie Edgar’s career. Unlike the loss to Gray Maynard, Edgar was able to use footwork to avoid getting bullied by his larger opponent. Although, it should be noted that it was a hard fought victory.

While Sean Sherk didn’t look terrible in this fight, it looks like he may never get another crack at the title. If Kenny Florian gets the belt, he’ll have a much stronger case. However he’s going to need to put together a few wins to first. To do that, he’s going to have to accept the fact that he’s not a great striker.

Granted, I have no desire to see the blanketing Sean Sherk of old. We should thank him for having exciting fights. It just means that his chances of victory are considerably slimmer.

What’s funny is that Edgar was able to deftly avoid one of Sherk’s patented double leg takedowns. Sherk may have lost regardless of what strategy he used. At the very least, this fight shows that Edgar will have no need to drop a weight class after all.
