Spencer Fisher vs. Caol Uno

Caol Uno hasn’t been in the UFC for many years. It’s likely that he left the UFC because he wasn’t content to be a mid-level contender. The UFC also abandoned the lightweight class around the time he left the company.

Much like the return of Cro Cop, it’s odd that Uno chooses to tackle the toughest organization at this stage in his career. However both he and the Croatian are in their mid 30’s and have stayed active in mixed martial arts. So, at this point we shouldn’t doubt their physical tools but rather their mindset. Is Uno truly ready to climb the lightweight ladder or is he just looking for a decent payday?

Unlike Cro Cop, Uno is getting a stern test in his return to the organization. Spencer Fisher has come close to getting a title shot. A win over an established veteran like Uno would get him very close to contender status.

This seems like a bad matchup for Uno. There’s no way to predict how well he will adjust to the rules of the UFC, having competed in Japan for so long. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is a classic case of a great fighter who needed several matches before being acclimatized to the octagon experience.

In the end, it will be Spencer Fisher’s fighting style that will make all the difference. Uno’s return jitters are just icing on the cake. Spencer has a good chance of overwhelming Uno. He may not finish him, seeing as how Uno has enough knowledge to survive in dangerous situations. However Spencer will win the stand-up exchanges and spend a bit of time dominating on the ground.

Uno has a slight “crafty veteran’s” chance of pulling off a submission. Having said that, it’s not a chance you’d want to place a bet on.
