Frankie Edgar Defeats Matt Veach
Poor Matt Veach. The guy has one fight in the company and he’s fed to Frankie Edgar. When it comes to new talent, I’ll never understand the UFC’s matchmaking decisions. This “bury the new guy” scheme is something you’d see in an insecure pro wrestling company. Frankie Edgar did what everyone would expect. He got the win over an unproven fighter. Edgar has evolved from being a 1-dimensional wrestler into a full-blown MMA fighter. He also shows the composure we’ve come to expect from UFC veterans. That proved to be necessary, as this win didn’t come easily. Veach gave Edgar some problems in the first round. Frankie still has a bit of trouble with large wrestlers. It’s to his credit that he hasn’t dropped down to featherweight, as he’s really fighting an uphill battle in the UFC. However the size difference proved to be negligible. Like a young Matt Hughes, Veach doesn’t have any finishing-skills on the ground. Edgar weathered the storm and came out swinging in round two. Frankie clearly had the better cardio. So, it’s no surprise that he was able to put his superior grappling skills to good use. Veach needs to work on his ground defense, even though wrestlers hate working from the bottom. After all the wins he’s accumulated in this company, you’d think Frankie Edgar would be due for a title shot. However a win against a rookie doesn’t prove that much does it? Perhaps if he could avenge his loss to Gray “The Bully” Maynard, he’d show he’s a true threat at 155.
