Georges St. Pierre vs. Thiago Alves

Georges St. Pierre defeats Thiago Alves
by unanimous decision at UFC 100

After a 5-round domination of the clear-cut #1 contender, you have to ask yourself: what the hell is next for the welterweight champion? Sending in a superior striker doesn’t do it. Georges doesn’t have any problems with bigger opponents. There’s nobody close to his size with equal wrestling skill.

So what’s the next logical career move? GSP vs. Lesnar – the Rise of the Frenchman.

Actually, after suffering a torn groin in this match, Georges would love to take it easy for a while. He even mentioned his hesitation about going up to the middleweight division, as he walks around at about 185. He’ll have to bulk up when he’s ready to do so, as there’s not much left for him at 170. Both Mike Swick and Martin Kampmann would get rag-dolled by Georges.

Anyway, we should have a word or two about this fight. Thiago Alves had a few offensive moments on the feet. Georges showed his willingness to engage there too. Whenever Thiago threw a kick, he got taken down. St. Pierre’s timing was perfect.

Alves was able to use pure strength to get back to his feet. He didn’t get pummeled as badly as BJ Penn did. This 5-round war resembled GSP vs. Fitch, in that the challenger got to have the dignity of surviving to the final bell.

There’s nothing much that Thiago Alves could have done differently. Georges St. Pierre is clearly the best fighter in the welterweight division. If Georges stays at this weight class, we should hope he doesn’t get bored and start dancing his way to victory ala Anderson Silva. In fact, GSP needs to move up to 185, if only to remind Silva what it’s like to have the heart of a champion.

Next Fight: Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir
