Georges St. Pierre vs. Thiago Alves

The UFC is pushing this as the biggest test of Georges St. Pierre’s career. They’re reminding us that Thiago Alves is both younger and stronger than GSP. Alves himself is telling everyone that he’s going to take one of the best pound-for-pound fighters and knock him out.

Sure, right after I punch-out God.

Yes, it’s true that Alves has definitely earned this title shot opportunity. However he’s not considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. The reason being is he hasn’t been on the roll that GSP has. More than that, Georges is considered a much more well-rounded fighter. Thiago isn’t nearly the wrestler that his opponent is. Although, his takedown defense has been steadily improving. Alves has had problems with the scale as well. He must love his ice cream.

St. Pierre’s one weakness has been his mind. He demonstrated the pitfalls of a champion attaining fame and fortune when he’s not ready for it. However that GSP seems long gone. The hype show for his bout with Grease-Awareness Activist BJ Penn showcased his unrivaled dedication to training. Georges is doing everything possible to be the best at every aspect of MMA.

Thiago Alves is a great striker that’s merely good at everything else. However his self-confidence is undoubtedly high. It’s that aspect that gives him the best chance of winning this match. Other opponents of GSP would find themselves in doubt on their way to the octagon.

If Thiago Alves really wants to win this, he’s got to fight like he wants to KO the Almighty himself. As for GSP, he needs to stay focused at all times. Georges is at his worst when things don’t go his way. If things go well, this match will be a learning experience that doesn’t cost him his title.
