Georges St Pierre

Georges St Pierre is one of the most popular fighters in the welterweight division and in the UFC in general. Why is he such a hot commodity?

Favorite Sayings
Well, for starters, he comes across as being very nice. Most fighters are willing to sell their fight by badmouthing their opponent, even if it’s in a playful fashion. Georges St Pierreon the other hand likes to focus his talk on how he can overcome his opponent in the octagon. That is, he treats fighting as a business and not a pro-wrestling spectacle. Having said that, his feuds with Matt Hughes and Matt Serra have brought out the nastier side of him. He did not resort to childish name-calling in either case. And, he has apologized for almost every unkind word he has spoken to or about both individuals. One of his ‘worst comments’ came after Hughes had defeated BJ Penn:

“I am not impressed by your performance”

…to Matt Hughes. Supposedly, Georges received some misinformation stating that Hughes was calling him out after the fight. This was one of the few times GSP has said anything this antagonistic. It shows that he gets a little worked up sometimes, just like the rest of us.

I actually like Georges St Pierre more because of his occasional emotional outbursts because it shows that he’s human. Also, as I alluded earlier his transgressions are fairly minor compared to most fighters. The point is you can tell he is very passionate about his fighting. He’s not just in this for the money.

As a Fighter…
At age 7, Georges St Pierre started learning martial arts to protect himself against a bully. Starting with Kyokushin karate and moving to wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing, at age 16 he had his first win at amateur MMA.

Win or loss, he brings excitement to the octagon each and every time he fights. He is a very well-rounded competitor but his greatest strength is his wrestling. Unlike a lot of UFC competitors, GSP didn’t compete in amateur wrestling until he started training as a MMA fighter. He has been able to out-wrestle fighters who have a wealth of amateur experience due to his superior athleticism. His nickname “Rush” is well-earned because it describes what he does to his opponents. He pressures them with offense wherever the fight goes. While he is not lacking in skill, it is his constant energy that has allowed him to steamroll top-notch competition.

Judge’s Decision
Georges St Pierre is on his second run with the welterweight title and he’s only in his mid-20’s. He started competing in the UFC at such a young age that we’ve had the privilege of watching him mature over the course of his career. He is a native of Quebec but has endeared himself to all of North America by learning to speak English. He has even apologized for his language skills despite the fact that he’s not hard for a non-Francophone to understand. He’ll always have a lot of pull in whatever company he’s in because he likes to finish fights. He is also a good-looking fellow. Although, I’d like to think he’d be as successful without girls screaming at him…we’ll never know. Georges St Pierre is someone the UFC is keen to promote, with good reason, now and for the foreseeable future.

Fights to Watch
Hughes vs. St. Pierre 2 from UFC 65: Bad Intentions. This one is my personal favorite. Georges got the chance for revenge against the only man at that point in time that had defeated him. It showed that GSP had grown as a fighter and wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice. Georges St Pierre won by TKO in the second round.
