James Wilks vs. DaMarques Johnson

James Wilks defeats DaMarques Johnson
by rear naked choke at the Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale

James Wilks was very aggressive in this bout. He out-struck DaMarques Johnson when they were within punching range of one another. In the clinch, he landed knees to the face and body. He seemed to be the one controlling where the fight went.

While on the ground, Wilks was constantly going for submissions. He looked more dangerous than DaMarques, regardless of who was on top. The rear naked choke Wilks sunk in during the final seconds of the first round was a thing of beauty.

While Wilks is clearly the superior fighter, there was also something wrong with Johnnson’s mind set. He just wasn’t prepared for how eager Wilks was to finish the match in the first round. It’s also probable that much like his coach, he underestimated the UK opposition.

In the future, there should be no more of that. It’s clear from this past season that there’s untapped potential in the UK market. It’s not surprising there was a contrast in talent between the two nations. The Ultimate Fighter has plumbed the depths of American talent for years now. Personally, I’m campaigning for Canada vs. Brazil as the next show format. Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva could be the coaches. Make it happen Dana!

Next Fight: Diego Sanchez vs. Clay Guida
