John Howard Defeats Daniel Roberts

Daniel Roberts came out with a lot of enthusiasm. When he got John Howard to the ground, it looked like he was close to winning. But John proved he could weather an early storm.

When Howard got Roberts on the ground, it was a different story. John channeled the spirit of Shogun Rua with a lazer-accurate strike. When you’re standing over your opponent you have a lot of power at your disposal. However it’s tricky to control where your fist is landing, as you’re going from standing to kneeling in mid-punch.

John Howard pulled this off as well as anyone. Roberts was out the second the punch landed. The poor guy took a couple of needless shots before the ref stepped in.

Despite the awesome finish, the highlight of the bout came after it had been stopped. As John went for a victory back flip, the Commissioner was in the process of walking across the octagon. So, The Commish had to patiently wait as John had his celebration. What I really loved about this was Joe’s cavalier description of it. He deadpanned that “The Commissioner almost got hit by a back flip”…because, y’know…that can happen in the UFC. It’s not strange at all, really.
