Luiz Cane vs. Steve Cantwell

Luiz Cane defeats Steve Cantwell
by decision at UFC 97.

This was a very competitive match in which both fighters were able to put on a good show. Steve Cantwell didn’t fall into the “WEC loser” role. At only 22 years of age, Steve’s showing that he’s got a future in the UFC.

Early in the fight it looked like he was getting overwhelmed – either by the aggression of Cane or the pressure of being on PPV. However he overcame his jitters and managed to make it to the end of the third round. He looked the best in the second round but only one judge gave him credit for it.

Luiz Cane managed to continue the momentum he’s been building in the UFC. He still won’t be in line for a title shot any time soon. His stand-up looked good in this fight. His opponent definitely walked away with the most visible damage. Sadly, we didn’t get to see any of Cane’s knockout power.

There are several fighters (Rampage, Rashad, Rua) who would give Luiz Cane trouble right now. Perhaps a fight with a fallen star like Keith Jardine would be appropriate. Also, a fight with someone with lots of speed (such as Brandon Vera) would be interesting.
