Matt Serra Defeats Frank Trigg

Matt Serra put his knockout power on display tonight. Good for him. After all, he doesn’t use his ground skills any more. The question is: Can he KO any of the top 10 UFC welterweights? Normally I’d say no, but Serra has a habit of making me look stupid.

Given how he looked tonight, Serra does have a chance of making a splash in his division. The problem is he only fights once a year. He’ll be a senior citizen by the time he gets a title shot. Most people agree that in order to get noticed, you need to be more active. Then again, if he’s always this motivated, we might get to see GSP vs. Serra 3 after all.

As for Frank Trigg, he did absolutely nothing with his wrestling ability tonight. Didn’t he see Serra’s first fight with Georges St. Pierre? Or even Serra’s last match with Hughes? If Trigg did, he would have realized that you’d need to prevent Serra from finding his rhythm. If you stay in Serra’s punching range the whole time, you’re asking for trouble.

This is especially problematic if you have average stand-up skills. Trigg has never been the most dynamic striker. Plus, he’s lost the killer instinct that he had when he was younger. We’ll call this Mirko Cro Cop syndrome.

Sadly, unlike the afore-mentioned Croatian, Trigg does not bring in any extra PPV buys. It should come as no surprise that he was let go after this loss.

Next Fight: Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller
