Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg

It’s hard to believe these two were once at the top of the welterweight food chain. Now, this is a loser leaves town match. Even though the winner will have earned his right to stay, it’s doubtful he’ll be able to accomplish much in the near future.

Frank Trigg looked slow in his last fight. Being one of Josh Koscheck’s KO victims is not something to be proud of. Indeed, Trigg’s striking has never been his strong suit. In the past, he’s been able to get things done with his wrestling. However there’s a lot more wrestling talent now than there was five years ago. Overall, fighters have gotten more versatile.

Luckily for Trigg, Matt Serra had a hard time dealing with Matt Hughes’s takedowns. Trigg may be able to frustrate Serra in similar fashion. Of course, Serra has modest knockout power in his hands. Though, he’s not as fast as Koscheck.

Therefore, Trigg has a fighting chance of getting a decision win. Still, he has to be very patient on his feet. Frank seems like an emotional fighter. He’ll need a lot of discipline to avoid getting into a slugfest.

If he gets things to the mat, he’ll have to be conservative there too. He should stick to a basic ground and pound strategy. There’s no point in playing the submission game with a guy like Serra.
