Is This a Megadeath Concert??
July 23, 2008 Affliction – Part 2: I really should amend the first thing I said in this article because the first thing I noticed Affliction was MEGADEATH. Yes, it’s a rock concert/MMA show! I’m not a big fan of Megadeath but I felt they certainly could have done worse as far as rock bands go. In fact, the way the fighters came out to “Symphony of Destruction” like they used to do the opening roll call in PRIDE was kinda neat. Certainly fans of the now defunct Japanese promotion would appreciate the way Affliction was trying to recreate the grandeur and spectacle of it, albeit in a very Americanized way. Anyway, even though I thought it was kind of tacky having an aging metal band playing at the beginning of a MMA show, my only real problem with the live band was when they were allowed to play in the middle of the show! Which bring me to another complaint I have about the show: Pacing. Having Megadeath play yet another song in between fights just served to break up the flow of the show. Granted, the UFC is also guilty of showcasing non-MMA content in the middle of their PPV’s. I’m sure people have lots to say about their infamous celebrity interviews and commercials. I guess I need to accept that there can’t be non stop fights in any show, PPV or otherwise. I feel that the UFC has gotten better about throwing in preliminary bouts in between the live fights to help speed up the pace of the broadcast. Affliction had already aired their prelims on FSN before the show, so they didn’t have that option. By the way, what did other people think of it being a FOUR hour show? Between the one hour prelim broadcast and the four hour PPV they knew they could air all their fights…and Megadeath…and all the hype and chit chat you could possibly want. Or more. Speaking of hype, did you know that Affliction: Banned is brought to you by… Affliction? Yea, that one surprised me too. Good thing they reminded me so many times. Personally, I prefer the UFC doing a three hour show with them trying to cram in as many fights as possible. You might not get to see “everything” from that event but you won’t get as restless either. I know I’m knitpicking a bit here but Affliction really needs to brainstorm about their next show to see how they can tighten up their broadcast.
