Randy Couture Defeats Mark Coleman

Mark Coleman has arguably the greatest ground and pound of all-time. Having Mark Coleman on top of you is a death-sentence.

So where the hell was his signature double leg takedown?

Apparently, he forgot to use it. Or, he had a lot of respect for Randy Couture’s takedown defense. Either way, he decided to stand and bang with Randy. That proved to be a bad idea. Randy is officially a very good striker. He may not be able to stand toe-to-toe with anyone in the light heavyweight division, but he can damn sure pick apart a one-dimensional wrestler.

I can’t compliment Randy Couture enough. Luckily, Joe pretty much covered it – Randy keeps improving, he’s healthy, he’s got motivation, etc. I will add that the last point is crucial. Being keen on training hard and fighting top guys AFTER you’ve already built a legacy is the key to Randy’s current success.

I feel bad for Mark Coleman. It seemed like he trained hard for this bout. He knew he had a lot of things to work on. Plus, he built this up as a way to impress his family.

Despite the loss, the man has nothing to be ashamed of. Time has an effect on all of us, both mentally and physically. He just doesn’t have what it takes to compete at this level. There are tons of fighters out there young and old that can’t make it in the UFC.

Speaking of which, not even the last name Gracie guarantees you success…
