Ross Pearson vs. Andre Winner
Ross Pearson defeats Andre Winner by unanimous decision at the Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale
This was a very tough match to score, mostly because both fighters suffered little damage. Most of the contest occurred against the fence. Joe Rogan made the comparison to Chris Lytle and Matt Serra from the Ultimate Fighter 4 finale. Thankfully, this match was slightly more entertaining than that. I’d say the scoring in this fight was a bit more controversial than the Sanchez/Guida fight (more on that later). Andre Winner looked like he was in control of the clinch more often than Ross Pearson was. One would need a pencil and scorecard to determine who threw more strikes. Again, it’s hard to determine the effectiveness of the strikes when both fighters escape relatively unscathed. However Pearson did land some good knees in the final seconds of the match. He also landed a decent elbow near the end of round two. You could tell in the third round that Winner was a bit gassed. Clearly, these little things are going to make a big difference in a fight like this. It will be interesting to see how Pearson does when not fighting a friend. Hopefully, he’ll be able to be more aggressive. Sadly for him, there are very few easy fights to be had in the UFC’s lightweight division. Mac Danzig is an Ultimate Fighter winner who’s had hard luck in this division. Pearson will need to up his game in order to survive.
