Sam Stout vs. Matt Wiman
Sam Stout defeats Matt Wiman by decision at UFC 97
Leave it to the little guys (who weren’t even supposed to be on the main card) to put on the best match of the evening. Sam Stout is definitely a “technical striker” with all the positives and negatives that come with the title. Pro: he has accurate strikes. He also knows how to mix up his attacks. The body punch he delivered to Matt Wiman was the big highlight. Con: he backs up too much. Even though you can’t blame him for not wanting to take damage, it’s still a problem. He has Crocop syndrome in that he doesn’t perform well when he’s bullied. Matt Wiman is a “gutsy kid” to say the least. He looked awfully hurt at the end of the second round. He probably knew he was down on the scorecards because he put in a tremendous third round effort. Stout must have felt stupid in the third round, realizing that he missed his chance to finish him earlier. He also must have considered his lack of takedown defense to be a problem. He also had a tough time dealing with a damaged Matt Wiman on top of him. I did mention Stout was a striker, right? He was damn lucky to walk away with a decision victory. In all fairness to him, a part of me felt the decision should have gone the other way. It’s true that the right person won, based on the UFC’s 10-point must system. However it’s likely that those corrupt PRIDE judges would have given the fight to Wiman for showing more heart in the last round.
