Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Chuck Liddell

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua defeats Chuck Liddell
by TKO at UFC 97.

Chuck Liddell looked to be in great shape for this fight. Joe Rogan was talking about Chuck’s improved defense that he had been developing at American Top Team. He showed that he had done his homework for this fight as he was able to avoid Shogun’s crafty leg lock attempt.

Liddell even decided to go back to his wrestling roots. Shogun wasn’t ready for it. Despite having control on the ground, Liddell opted to stand back up. I thought that was a very dubious decision. When he got hit in the face he (and his career) crashed to the mat. Shogun administered the obligatory hammer fists in order to cause the referee stoppage.

After the fight, Joe asked Chuck what his plans were for the future. It was only done as a token gesture. Joe and Mike had pretty much retired Chuck by the end of the night. Even though Chuck didn’t say it when he had the chance, he probably knew it was over. They’re already calling this “the end of an era” for Chuck and the UFC. I’d say that’s putting it mildly.

Oh yea, Shogun…he fought too. He looked great. It seems he’s finally gotten over those two knee surgeries he dealt with last year. It’s good to be reminded why he was once considered to be the best 205er in the world of MMA. His striking wasn’t quite as “laser-accurate” as we’ve seen in the past but it was definitely effective. Of course, there’s still a question mark regarding his cardio.
