Spencer Fisher vs. Caol Uno

Spencer Fisher defeats Caol Uno
by unanimous decision at UFC 99

Caol Uno’s strategy was to take Spencer Fisher to the ground and work for submissions. He did get a few takedowns in the fight, but was never close to finishing his opponent. Fisher wanted to throw combos while standing. He did score some points on the feet that were just enough to win the fight. However he never felt comfortable unleashing his true power, as he was always worried about being taken down.

This is what you would call a clash of styles. It’s also known as a classic grappler vs. striker match. Joe said this bout was something martial arts purists could appreciate. He also mentioned that the “casual drunken meat head” would be rather disappointed. The problem with Joe Rogan is that you can never tell what’s on his mind.

Most people thought this was a rather pedestrian affair. While there were things to appreciate, it didn’t amount to much in the way of entertainment. Also, both casual and serious fans like to see a clear-cut winner. In this case, the fight could easily have been ruled a draw. If anything, the last minute flurry by Uno could have won him the fight. As it was, Fisher should feel lucky to have gotten away with the victory.
