The Ultimate Fighter Season 10 Outlook pt. 2

Rashad Evans

Pro: He’s a former TUF winner, which makes him a natural pick to put on SPIKE TV. Not only that, but he won season 2 as a heavyweight. More importantly, he’s a young fighter the UFC wants to keep around. Being a former light heavyweight champion, he should have plenty of advice to give upcoming fighters. He’s also got a decent amount of charisma. While he’s normally soft-spoken, he did quite a lot of trash-talking with Rampage at UFC 96.

Con: Much like former coaches Michael Bisping and Forrest Griffin, he’s being given this spot because he’s a former season winner. Neither of these three had any significant experience coaching other fighters when they were picked as coaches. However it’s clear that they want personalities rather than true coaches. Ultimately, this is a quest for ratings, more than anything else.

Rampage Jackson

Pro: He’s being brought in because he’s considered a ratings draw. Apparently, the SPIKE TV officials requested him specifically for that reason. You can’t blame them either. Rampage has that all-important quality in a reality show character: unpredictability. He loves to crack jokes, particularly towards his opposing coach. We saw that in season 7 via his “team brown-nose” comments. We also know that he gets very involved in his team. He went on a sign-bashing spree when one of his fighters lost a close decision. He also made a bold proclamation that his fight with Forrest wouldn’t go to a judges decision…and we all know how that turned out. Ahem.

Con: The only thing I can think of is that his last stint as a coach came fairly recently. Being a repeat offender isn’t new to this show, as Matt Hughes was brought back for a second time.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, season 10 is shaping up to be quite interesting. Despite the supposed cons listed previously, we may welcome a season with some controversy. Season 9, despite having the nation rivalry, has been one of the most boring yet. There aren’t many fighters that are worth supporting.

Dan Henderson was a fairly boring addition to the Ultimate Fighter. He’s a great fighter and possibly even a decent coach. However he’s not in the least bit stimulated by the camera. Michael Bisping is hyper-sensitive to the camera, getting emotional at all possible opportunities. Unfortunately, the chemistry between him and Henderson has been non-existent. Even the tennis match got more passion from the fighters than it did from the coaches.

Those wanting more excitement will probably enjoy season 10 more than season 9. Given their war of words at UFC 96, Rampage and Rashad will make for entertaining additions to the reality show. If black-on-black crime doesn’t make for good ratings, I don’t know what will.
