About the Show UFC Fight Night 17, the February 7th edition featured some great fights and key demographic commercials. If you had your finger on the fast-forward button this was one solid night of entertainment.I would like to criticize the UFC’s use of airtime. There was an overwhelming ratio of extraneous content compared to actual fight time. We were treated to clips of Street Fighter 4 and the new Friday the 13th movie. I rather enjoyed the SF4 content because it’s a game I’m excited to play. The extended-trailer for Friday the 13th was a bit much because they revealed every damn kill in the movie. But you have to give credit to the UFC for knowing what demographic they’re trying to reach. The interview/hard-sell for this DEA show was less welcome. And is the UFC deciding not to pay for the rights to air the fighters’ entrance music? During what I think was the Joe Lauzon walk-in we were treated to a 1-second clip of Joe’s 3 strengths while he was at the prep point. After that 1-second we were quickly whisked away to some stock crowd shots. In past events they’ve shown the walk-ins for the main event of the UFC Fight Night shows. These economic times must be hitting the UFC harder than we thought. Or perhaps they just wanted to make sure they showed all the commercial content they had lined up. At the very least, your production people should not tease the viewers with relevant content. So, my advice is to view these shows after you’ve either taped or downloaded them. They’re great to watch when you can fast-forward through all the extraneous content. The UFC may have big bills to pay but we’ve got our own to deal with. Given that most of us have jobs that eat up our time, we’d like to have our entertainment be as streamlined as possible.
